As the final seconds ticked down, the Tigers threw their hands in the air, victorious.

Then they reached their arms out — to find a teammate to embrace.

The Auburn men’s wheelchair basketball team won its first national championship in program history on Saturday in Arizona, the second-seeded Tigers upsetting top-seeded Alabama in a storybook finish to the National Wheelchair Basketball Association’s collegiate division national tournament.

Auburn won 70-59. Drew Beutel scored a team-high 23 points for the Tigers and dished six assists. Jake Eastwood scored 19 points, dished six assists and picked up three steals. Jude Hiley scored 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field, and pulled down six rebounds.

Hiley was named MVP of the championship game.

Auburn at the national tournament, hosted by the University of Arizona, topped Wisconsin-Whitewater in the quarterfinals and beat Southwest Minnesota State in the semifinals. The top-seeded Tide waited in the finals — and Auburn and Alabama had split their rival game 3-3 in six games in the regular season.

“It was about midway through the second quarter that we decided to go up in a full-court press, and we pressed them for the remainder of the game,” Auburn head coach Robb Taylor said this week, recounting the win. “They didn’t trust their bench to go in and run against us, and our guys were faster, they were quicker, they just seemed more conditioned — and they stepped up when they needed to.”

Auburn trailed by as many as eight in the first quarter before cutting the deficit to one point by halftime — and in the second half the Tigers took over.

“It’s great to be an Auburn Tiger,” the fans chanted in the final seconds of the win at the McKale Center in Tuscon. Players from the bench rolled onto the court as the clock when the final buzzer sounded, hugging and embracing each other in celebration.

“It was incredible. The amount of work that all of the guys have put in all year to get to that point was just great,” Taylor said. “Of course, they had to make it a little tough on me at the end when we missed a number of free throws in the last minute of the game — but, fortunately, our defense played so great that Alabama wasn’t able to get a whole lot of clean looks off. As soon as the clock hit zero, everything just kind of slowed down a little bit. Everyone was all over the place and celebrating.

“It was just incredible for our program to go through that whole game and then being able to celebrate at the end with the guys was awesome.”

As for Taylor, when the buzzer sounded he turned to find assistant coach Zach Dickey and give him a hug. Dickey was one of Taylor’s athletes early on when he first got to Auburn some 10 years ago to start the wheelchair basketball program, and he’s been with him through the whole build from starting a program from scratch to national championship winner.

In a dream deal, Auburn is bringing international soccer to Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Auburn announced on Tuesday that Argentina and Iceland will play a friendly in Jordan-Hare on June 9 just days before the FIFA World Cup kicks off.

It’ll be a first-of-its-kind event for Jordan-Hare Stadium. The World Cup, in North America this year, is a global phenomenon, and Auburn will be hosting a match just as the anticipation for the tournament reaches a boil. Auburn will not only be hosting an international match, but it’ll be hosting the defending World Cup champions in Argentina.

And Auburn may well be hosting a global superstar and one of the sport’s greatest players of all time: Lionel Messi.

Auburn’s administration announced Monday it would be parting ways with gymnastics coach Jeff Graba — who guided the Tigers to unprecedented heights and into the modern era of SEC gymnastics, snapping The Streak, levelling the playing field, and taking Auburn to the Final Four.

Now, athletics director John Cohen and his staff roll the dice with hopes a new voice can elevate the program even higher.

Pat Dye changed Auburn football, famously, by resetting the playing field.

In a literal sense, he changed the playing surface of the Iron Bowl by bringing it to Jordan-Hare Stadium — when playing at Legion Field was less of a “neutral site” and more a home game for Alabama. He also reset the playing field in a figurative sense, coming in on the heels of Paul Bryant’s reign and snapping a nine-game losing streak in the rivalry went Bo went over the top in 1982. Since that game, the rivarly is an even 20-20. Since that game, and through the efforts of his tenure, Alabama no longer holds all the cards, and the playing field has been reset.

Jeff Graba did the same for Auburn gymnastics. Powerhouse Alabama boasted “The Streak,” a 117-meet winning streak over Auburn in gymnastics before Graba’s Tigers beat Alabama for the first time in 36 years in 2016. Then they did it again — and again and again. Auburn won three straight rivalry meets at home in 2020, 2022 and 2024, and in 2025 Auburn won at Coleman Coliseum for the first time ever. There were more to those wins than some stuck landings: Graba had to change a perception in the gymnastics world, even in the minds of the judges. The Auburn job was not for the faint of heart when he took it over in 2010, stuck between a rock and a hard place between 10-time national champion Georgia and four-time national champion Alabama. It’s a subjective sport: The skills when they were being done by someone with a script A or a G on the chest were how it was “supposed” to look, and how it looks with an AU was not.

It was an impressive uphill climb to make it to the NCAA Championship meet three times, including a trip to the Final Four in 2022. Derrian Gobourne won a share of a national title on vault and Suni Lee won a national title on beam and went on to win Olympic gold a second time, thanks in no small part to Graba’s coaching between cycles. Just last year, Auburn won in Coleman and was a tenth away from the national championship meet.

It didn’t take long for Auburn to re-right the ship after Thursday’s disappointing loss at Texas A&M.

The Tigers got it done before they were even out of the state.

And the match itself didn’t even take long, as No. 4 Auburn bounced back with a sweep on No. 6 Texas on Saturday to salvage a split on the road trip. Auburn took the doubles point then won three singles matches in straight sets to clinch it.

Katya Khairutdinova, Ashton Bowers and Ava Esposito all won in singles at Texas, earning meaningful wins all for different reasons:

• Bowers, in her first season with the Tigers out of the transfer portal, beat her former team;

• Khairutdinova finally picked up a win against a top team;

• and Esposito won convincingly in her return to the starting lineup.

To rewind: Auburn on Thursday lost to No. 2 Texas A&M in what was a battle for sole possession of first place in the SEC standings with only four matches to play.

It was a major blow to Auburn’s chances at winning the SEC’s regular-season championship — and it’ll prove to be the fatal blow if A&M wins out.

But there are still most of the marbles left to play for with the SEC Tournament to come and the NCAA Tournament to follow, and to that end, Auburn managed to shake off that loss with flying colors.

It all fell apart for Auburn in the end.

In just a few swings, the nightmare came true, and the potential of a lost season solidified into a truly lost season when the Tigers exited the NCAA Regional semifinals on Thursday night in Baton Rouge.

It was closer than the final score indicated: Auburn was within a tenth of advancing Clemson through two bar routines in the fourth rotation, then collapse compounded on collapse: Olivia Greaves toppled backward on her dismount, Emma Grace Boyd drug her feet underneath the low bar, and even Alex Irvine missed the high bar amid the distraction of LSU celebrating a 10 and a march onward to the regional final. Irvine shook her head with a grimacing smile when she was back at the chalk bucket. It just didn’t work out. Bars was rough for Auburn to start the season and proved to be Auburn’s undoing at the end. The Tigers wanted to put it all together in the postseason, but they didn’t.

To add to the disappointment, Auburn ended the night without an individual in position to advance to nationals. The season’s done in the round of 32.

Now what?

Auburn through struggles all season had held onto the hope that in the postseason it’d have one more chance to put it all together. Now what, now that Auburn is forced to face the uncomfortable reality that a rough season is finished with no redemption?

Auburn hasn’t fired on all cylinders all season. Head coach Jeff Graba will be the first to say it.

It hasn’t been an easy year, by any stretch: Rising star Sophia Bell went down early in the year, and established star Keko Jong was hampered all season before going down again herself. But there have been difficulties, too, for the gymnasts who’ve managed to stay in, as it’s been a story of steps forward and steps backwards. Auburn has scored high on each apparatus at different points this season — but never all at once. It’s been a season of unrealized potential.

So Auburn enters the postseason staring at uncomfortable results but thinking glass-half-full: Auburn isn’t one of the teams entering this NCAA postseason that’s performed at its best and its scores still not been good enough to make the national meet. Instead, there’s potential still out there on the competition floor, and the Tigers have a chance at NCAA regionals to go get it.

“I’ve been through a year where we’re ranked 17th in the country and we haven’t hit,” Graba said, as his team prepared to travel to Baton Rouge for Thursday’s NCAA Regional semifinal at LSU. “You can take that either way: You can take that as we haven’t hit, or you can take that as, if we do hit, everybody should be nervous. It’s on us to hit.”

Yes, fortunately for the Tigers, they get a chance this week to re-write the legacy of the 2026 team: It’ll finish as the squad that never put it all together, or as the squad that finally put it all together in the postseason.

“I think we have best opportunity presented at us, and ... this is a fresh start for us and that’s what we’re treating it as,” Auburn junior Olivia Greaves said. “We’re just real excited to get out there.”

Auburn competes at 7 p.m. Thursday in the regional’s evening semifinal. The two teams with the best two scores in the quad meet advance to the regional final at 5 p.m. Saturday. The top two teams to come out of that regional final advance to the national championship meet

College Gym News simulated the postseason using all the scores from this season as data, and in 10,000 simulations, Auburn only advanced to the regional final in 23.72% of them. The simulator gives Auburn less than a 1% chance to make the national meet.

“We need to put the pressure on other people. There is no pressure on us,” Graba said. “We’re not supposed to qualify on. The math states, if you filled out your NCAA basketball bracket, we’re the upset that everybody’s rooting for but hardly ever happens.”

But the math is based on meets from earlier this season, and Auburn’s convinced it’s better than how it’s performed all season.

Plus, as Greaves said, the Tigers have reason to believe they’re in the best position possible going to Baton Rouge.

DJ Bennett didn’t even consider the stat until the day before Saturday’s match.

But it sure crossed her mind during it.

A senior for Auburn women’s tennis going for her fourth win over Alabama in her four years, for a perfect 4-0 rivalry record, Bennett also had not lost to an Alabama player during her career at Auburn.

She entered Saturday’s rivalry match 5-0 against Crimson Tide opponents, counting three regular-season conference matches with Alabama her freshman through junior years, plus two fall wins at ITA Regionals and an Auburn Invite match.

Laughing about it after, Bennett seemed to think it was only fitting that in her last scheduled match against Alabama, she’d drop the first set and trail early.

“I didn’t even think about that stat until somebody said to me yesterday. So I was kind of thinking about it in my match. I lost the first set and I was down in the second and I was like, ‘Are you kidding me?!’” Bennett laughed. “But, no, it’s cool. It’s a cool stat to have, for sure.”

Cool, at the end of the day, because, yes, Bennett came back to win her match handedly in a truncated third-set tiebreaker, and after just a bit of tension on the singles courts, Auburn pulled away to win Saturday’s rivalry match comfortably at 6-1. Auburn’s last team loss to Alabama came before COVID, in March 2019.

Bennett with her comeback win also moved to 6-0 collegiately against Crimson Tide opponents.

Her running partner of four years now, fellow senior Angella Okutoyi also in her fourth year on the Plains, won 6-3, 6-1 on Court 3 to pick up her fourth win against Alabama players.

Okutoyi has also earned a pair of doubles wins over Alabama in her career, and Bennett after Saturday has two doubles wins over Alabama to her name, as well.

Most importantly, they’re both 4-0 over Alabama in team play — and unless the rivals cross paths in either the SEC Tournament or the NCAA Tournament, they’ll both close their careers having never lost to the Tide.

Also importantly: Auburn moved to 26-2 on the season and 10-1 in SEC play.

Trucks hauling horses in those familiar trailers have been coasting off of Wire Road and into the Auburn Equestrian Center this week, as Auburn gets set to host the SEC Equestrian Championships this weekend. Up the hill and around the pole barn where competition is set to begin Friday, the Tigers have been working to ready the venue.

Yes, the athletes themselves have had a list of chores this week. They’ve been cleaning fences, placing barricades, assembling bleachers, even cutting some grass there — getting the venue ready themselves even though you wouldn’t see any other athletes in the SEC from any other sport doing anything like that. They do it because they’re proud of their program, proud of their sport and want to grow it, and proud to host SECs.

And the Tigers do it because they want the weekend to go off without a hitch — all the way up to their plan to hoist the SEC Championship trophy at the end of it.

“I think it would mean a lot,” Auburn senior Caroline Fredenburg said Thursday, as riders from all four competing programs milled about the grounds and warmed up for the weekend, and as horses were led into competition areas for warmups.
